Family businesses

The Port of New Bedford sustains a diverse and robust mix of shoreside businesses that service recreational and commercial vessels from across the Eastern seaboard.  Many of these businesses are family owned and operated; the older and younger generations of these families in the industry share the pride, love, and sometimes stress that comes with working with family.

Here, two generations of the Gundersen family share their experience.  “You don’t have the same amount of invested emotions in other jobs as you do in family business,” the youngest generation said.  The pride of continuing and preserving for future generations.

Three generations of James Dwyers have worked as lumpers on the New Bedford Waterfront.

Matt Lemieux shares a son’s perspective of working in a family business: the admiration he has for his father, and how it’s not always easy to know that  you have such big shoes to fill.
